📘 How IELTS Overall Score is Calculated
Understanding the official IELTS scoring and rounding system
The Formula
(Listening + Reading + Writing + Speaking) ÷ 4
Rounding Rules:
- • Average ending in .25 → rounded up to .5
- • Average ending in .75 → rounded up to next whole band
- • Average ending in .0 or .5 → stays the same
Example Calculation:
Individual Scores:
- • Listening: 6.0
- • Reading: 6.5
- • Writing: 6.0
- • Speaking: 6.5
Calculation:
- • Total: 6.0 + 6.5 + 6.0 + 6.5 = 25.0
- • Average: 25.0 ÷ 4 = 6.25
- • Overall Band: 6.5 (6.25 rounded up)
